Growth is an interactive audio/video installation that is powered by the Max/Msp programming environment. Two USB controllers have been reconfigured to generate music. There are two controllers so that two players might “jam” simultaneously.
An important feature of the installation is that no prior musical training or experience is necessary to enjoy the installation. One or two people may walk in, pick up controllers and begin playing immediately.
A vine grows before your eyes as the music is generated. It parallels the sense of synthetic naturalness that emerges from the synergy of the people playing together as well as with the resultant animation.
As the music grows more frantic, so does the animation. Both the vines and the music and the players are thus interconnected. The vines grow, as does the music, as does the user.
